Thanks for the great review! It made me feel really good. You're so sensitive to the feelings of others. I liked the 'Top Gun' part a lot, too. I suppose my music would sound a lot like the Top Gun soundtrack since I grew up with films like that(I was 10 in 1986) and play my music out of a keyboard from the mid 80's/early 90's. Shit, come to think of it, I LOVE Top Gun! Entertaining fucking movie.

You know, you are just a perfect example of how ugly and cruel the kids of this generation can be. Thanks for putting me on the suck pedestal for all to smirk at, you heartless shithead. I hope you die a quick, horrible death. Fuck you.

Ten shows (and one of them was only music) and you get a (well-deserved) nomination? Everybody wins with all that's going on in this category. Congrats guys; proud to be in your company.

to dismiss most of my songs as '3 word simpletons,' i feel does my writing a great discredit. i mean i have always loved songs like the small faces 'whatcha gonna do about it,' kinda' repetitive pop headbobbers, especially nice to listen to when one is having a few drinks, but at the same time, if one bothers to take the time to listen to any of my records, i am sure that you will most certainly find more than a compilation of '3' word songs.i mean there is a time and place on any record to get wordy, but at the same time, sometimes it's just nice to keep it simple. a good balance is always nice. as far as 'my persona' in europe, that is simply a farce. i have lost countless 'deals' due to the fact that i do NOT play live or personally promote my music, and have NEVER gained a label deal because i don't. when they get my records abroad, they really don't know shit about me as a person or whatever, they just seem to like what they hear. just my two cents...

I'm gonna plug this. But on the same vein as KatieMac, I'm going to make this my very first download and burn to CD podcast and listen on the way to SXSW.

It'll be like carpooling with SaMach but I don't have to stop for constant bathroom breaks.

Okay, c'mon guys...
why are you gonna send your demo to someone to critique and then get mad that they didn't say what you wanted them to say...
YOU may have control over the music but the CONTROL STOPS THERE, if you're going to be sending your stuff out for public play then you better be ready to take in what's DISHED to you...

Do I agree with everything that they said about my demo? No! not at all, but I do appreciate EVERYTHING that they said because, believe it or not, THIS is what people MAY or MAY NOT be thinking when they hear your music, and you must accept that.

kind of took the less ballsy rout by informing Ken it was your band before he got a chance to voice an opinion. otherwise, great show. the rhett is a dork story was great, and ken's explanation of the sinking of Sat. Rides was fascinating. you should get Brent Best on there next and give him a few drinks.

just listened to this. you maybe were a little snarky in your comments about joe k, but those clips you played did kind of suck, and he probably deserved it. what's with all the Bob Dylan allusions on these comments? is he the bullet proof argument for singing badly?

Glad to see you guys 1) pimping Bosque Brown and 2) not talking over the music for once. See ya next week!

"i’m saying respect the music even if it’s not what you’re about"

No, we will not. That is not our objective, nor do we feel it's a particularly useful endeavor.

There seems to be a gross misconception of what criticism is, and why it is important.

On the other hand, equal-opportunity support for a local scene is to be lauded, but imagine where we'd be if that were the only discussion?

what's goin on... my name is Joe Kirkland, you guys did a dconstruction on my demo back in october. thanks for listening, i appreciate it. just letting you guys know that your show should probably be called d"assume", or d"i'm a dallas podcaster and the only music is the music i like." or, you should get people who have a respect for every type of music... EVEN mainstream... uh oh i said it. by the way... john coltrane is a musical god... i know because i study him at the University of North Texas... only one of the best jazz schools in the nation. however i write poppy because that's what i like to write. oh, and if you want to talk about untrained voices, you might want to look at a legend called Bob Dylan... i don't know if you've heard of him... American Idol would have kicked his ass out.

Good Charlotte sounds nothing like me. and what's this with trying to sound like somebody?? ever heard of being unique?

i'm not saying i'm amazing, because i'm not, i'm saying respect the music even if it's not what you're about...

"i hate the song" is far from dconstruction... it's bias... good for you... but there's a reason why mainstream is "main"stream.

but yeah good luck with your little podcast... you guys are really going places...

just thought you guys could use a little dconstruction... you know, from the little voices.

by the way... we're headlining a show at the aardvark jan. 6th, tomorrow, you should come hear some good music.

19. "Landspeed Record" is actually a Moxie song, recorded just before they began their "new" Black Tie Dynasty sound. Thanks for putting this one on here. It's interesting to see that a band as young as BTD has already evolved. What an amazing 2005 they have had!

When a major record label listens to a demo they don't want to hear a full length album...they want key points of the music like the first demo. I also don't understand the cheap shots at the mainstream music because they have made it...they are making a living doing what they love to do...what the hell is wrong with that? I don't think its up to some podcast kings in fort worth to decide what is good song writing and what is horrible song writing. if you're going to do your little podcast right then you should maybe get some people with some different tastes with different opinions. also if you want to hear someone who is not the greatest singer in the world go listen to bob dylan...he is amazing and yet doesnt sing worth a crap...if he sent his demo into you, you would probably bash it...you fossilized tools.

dearest KatieMac,

hint:

If you're gonna be a name dropper (which you are - flagrantly), please drop some noteworthy names. John Dufilho does not a relevant figure make. No knocking John, but he is what he is. Aren't you a little old to be living vicariously through a bunch of twenty-something garage rockers?

Also - shooting blurry, canted photos on a Nikon D70 running full auto doesn't make you a "photographer" - a term that's thrown around like turds in the monkey exhibit. Whew, i need coffee.

This is great. This forum here and in the podcast form is one of the best things to happen to the DFW music scene since I've been here ('96). Whether the bands or the music is good or not is irrelevant, people are talking about it. That's what creates a scene.
I've always complained there is a lack of cohesiveness in a city(s) such as DFW with such a wealth of talent and now we have debate over who plays and promotes what bands and why etc...that's awesome. I think we're definitely on the right track. Dissention is good, variety is the spice of, diversity just ROCKS! So let's keep it up the debate and feed the scene we all want to create and be apart of, but keep it respectful of peoples opinions...and hope more live music clubs will get on-board and let these good bands play on a decent bill on a decent night.

my bad on the email, forgot the 8 before the @, it should be correct now. I appreciate the reply, I hope I wasn't too harsh earlier. I guess I got the wrong impression about what you guys are trying to do. I appreciate the fact that you are helping to "give critiques and very narrow recommendations" to the audience, it's something that is needed in this area because there are a lot of mediocre bands, and bands that are just plain awful. I guess I just feel like some of the bands in Fort Worth are overlooked sometimes and my accusations were not meant to be personally offensive. You should definitely check out those two bands though, I think they are both new on the scene but they have a good sound. I guess I got the wrong impression about what you guys are trying to do. I appreciate the fact that you are helping to “give critiques and very narrow recommendations” to the audience, it’s something that is needed in this area because there are a lot of mediocre bands, and bands that are just plain awful. I guess I just feel like some of the bands in Fort Worth are overlooked sometimes and my accusations were not meant to be personally offensive. You should definitely check out those two bands though, I think they are both new on the scene but they have a good sound. There are several others, but I don’t want to get into promoting other bands. Sorry if my first post was ill-worded. Have a good night and keep the show going.

Brad (who left a bogus email address, otherwise we would have sent this directly to you),

Thanks for listening - and commenting.

It seems you've missed the logic of our band listing. It includes only bands we've played on the show. To date, we've not yet played the Chemistry Set, Record Hop or Midlake (though the Chemistry Set makes the second half of the Valentines conversation, still in editing). As such, they're not on the list. The Burning Hotels and Modico are not too familiar. We'll have to check them out. Thanks for bringing them to our attention.

But you bring up a good point: we're not here to shotgun a bunch of bands at you (see Andrew's comment above). If you want that, then Cindy's your girl. Hell, if you want that, then go to Myspace and do a regional search for bands. Here, let me do it for you:

    Criteria:
      Genre: Rock
      Location: 5 miles within 75214

    Results: 380 bands

That's a lot. Within 20 miles, there are 1,430 (!) bands. Hopefully, some of our listeners find our service - which is to give critiques and very narrow recommendations - useful in this vast sea of mediocrity. But, if that's not your bag and you prefer to wade through the sewage yourself, more power to you.

Also - and this isn't directly intended as a defense of our "bashing Cindy's taste," which we find a bit strong given what was actually said - your "all or nothing" logic seems a bit specious. Because we don't list every good band, we therefore have no basis of taste? Especially when there are literally thousands of bands to evaluate in the DFW area, I think having to list every good band is an overly stringent criteria for taste, don't you?

I'm not saying we have taste, though.

Regardless, we do what we do because we enjoy it. I hope you do too, even if only on occasion. And if not, well, there's no accounting for taste, is there?

It would be easier for you to bash Cindy's taste if you actually included all of the good bands in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, but you don't. There are lots of bands who aren't in the FW Weekly/Dallas Observer cliques that are awesome and overlooked and only Cindy gives them the credit they deserve, e.g. The Burning Hotels, Modico, The Chemistry Set, Record Hop, and I don't even see Midlake listed. Those bands seem to fit in with your taste, so why no mention? I'd rather read and hear about more bands from Cindy and then check them out to see if they are good, then hear about a select few from you guys and miss out on some of the gems you look over.

in an actual response I'd like to say that I appreciate both of you for what you do. I'm all about promoting Texas bands over here in DC and I find Texasgigs.com to be a great source of bands I've never heard of. Though I do not promote any band I don't like, maybe bands I wouldn't normally listen to (case in point My Education) but certainly bands I feel have done something worthwhile and other people will want to hear it. As a form of media, I am the filter through which information is disseminated, just like you guys. It just so happens that the dconstruction boys are like cheese cloth with a very fine filtration system that only lets so much through to the other side.
Also, look at my playlists and compare it to the list you see over there on the right...lots of familiar names no?

The only thing I'd like to say on this subject, then I wish it death...is that I sat through an entire set of Kirk Thurmond's at The Door. I then invited him in for an interview and live play. Both performances were great.

The only issue I had with what was podcasted on said show was the part where it was presented...and I quote..."this is Cindy's pick of the week..." and ya'll played some crappy track you pulled off his PureVolume or whatever.

He's a young kid with a lot of promise...and I think he deserved a little more of a listen then one self-produced song when the plan was to rip him and his music to shreds.

Now please-o-please can we change the subject!

At times I enjoy your show. But I have a real problem with your comments about Cindy and her website. As you point out, you are music critics. So it is fair for you to act as music critics and criticize music itself. But whatever expertise you purport to have which allows you to criticize the artist she was promoting does not therefor grant you license to criticize the promoter herself. That is nonsensical. So stick to what you purport to be - music critics.

The only reason why you might feel obligated to tell your listeners that Cindy has bad taste is that you believe you are entitled to because your taste is inherently better. There is no yardstick to measure this claim to superiority - and can only be explained by sheer self-importance. Granted, you are running a music critique podcast, an undertaking which in itself requires unabashed ego to even conceive. Yet, perhaps that is the point - to create a program where you claim to be fostering a scene for music to flourish - but instead use it as a medium to drunkenly blovate incoherent nothings which bolster your unfilled musical egos. Indeed, the artist she linked to was quite bad. But you can tell by listening that that kid's heart is the right place. Listening to you guys leaves serious doubts.

Because it's a "thing" of mine, I have to chime in: there does need to be a question mark. "Never has a podcast's quality declined," would have worked. However, kudos for the correct use of the apostrophe! Though there is a suspicious lack of commas throughout.

Geesh, that podcast was horrible. You guys think you've got taste? First Auto-Escape which was the most cringe-inducing band I've voluntarily suffered through in recent memory and now the Valentines? Has a podcast's quality ever declined as steeply as this one. And the first few shows were so good! Oh well.

The Freek Out put on a good show, and not just in an "oh, this is silly" kinda way. Still finding their feet but more than worth yer time. It definitely helps that they have former Tah Dahs lead guitarist Michael Bryant leading things (a fact they rarely advertise). I'm gonna try to make it out to their Freeky Christmas show tonight at the Cavern and recommend it.

I did mention I gave you quantity over quality when I dropped off the CDs. I knew that was a bad idea when I did it.

However, I do love The Freek Out. The best? They wear glam rock costumes and masks when they play. They are incredibly amusing.

is this where i leave my reapply, because i'm only 31 (definitely under 33) and am really great at completing sounds, though it helps when guitar sounds are allready created by someone else without there head in there ass, preferebly younger front men (with that teen spirit) that can woo the ladies who don't mind coming in through the bathroom window, because people *are* strange.

Just listened to the 'gong show'... thanks for playing us.. I thought it was funny as hell... stung a little, but you know how it is... I do this because I love it not because you love it :)

anyway, thanks again for at least giving us the airtime. If you want to gong us again... you guys might check out the tracks No Good and Empty Nest. As you guys said on your show... those are a little more "your age bracket". (I guess??). Anyway, really entertaining show and the quality is great - the show itself sounds kick ass... looking forward to future shows and thanks for helping support local music.

Hi, you!

I'm very glad you had Venable for a guest -- not only because he has a really sexy radio voice, but also because that's the kind of authority you need to make this thing work. So here are my thoughts, should you be interested:

1. It's funny hearing you and Jenkins dealing with songs--whether it be something put forward to you by Venable or Crain--that are obviously meant to be on the radio (I'm referencing Eniac right now), and obviously songs you don't like. You guys are like, "Uh, yeah, that was a song." It's just funny to me.

2. Jenkins is getting too much time to talk about the strange boys--i'd love to hear what josh might have said about the first strange boys song, and it never came.

3. it's cute that venable says he wants to stay home and see seinfeld. according to zac, what he wants to do is make out with his wife. but then, both you and jenkins kind of pick up on this.

4. darlington? well, i'm glad someone loves it...

5. of course i love the discussion about old 97's.

6. i am sooo laughing about the sara radle comment-- i can't remember if you know, but sara is anathema to josh. they went out for a year or so, and afterward, he apparently went to everyone and asked them to "chose sides." mary always said she thought josh/zac wouldn't speak to her because, once upon a time, she was in a band with radle.

7. and thank you for mentioning fountains of wayne. nice work.

that's about it! it's a great dialogue, as usual. nice work. you should be proud...

I stumbled across this in a narcissistic google fest. I was looking for mentions of Lousy Robot (my band). Although you didn’t get to play our CD you have turned me onto this Pod Cast stuff. That and I am a huge fan of Texas bands.

I will be back.

Pilotdrift is brilliant...ya'll need to listen to the entire album (first one and the upcoming) and see them live...they are amazing! At least in my opinion.

They recorded the whole first album in their living room.

Did I mention my love for Pilotdrift?

Great show guys!

Another terrific podcast guys!

Funny - the older I get the less I want to hear ANY one whole CD by one band non-stop. I much prefer something really creative and interesting like something by Pilotdrift followed by a breezy pop-punk-thingy by 41 Georgous Blocks, followed by the overall coolness of a Glen Reynolds, etc.. etc… Of course it all depends on mood, doesn’t it?

I guess what I’m trying to say is evaluating Pilotdrift on the basis of a night of listening to them for an hour straight on a CD is probably not completely fair to them. That’s a tough listen. But they sure do sound good and talented nestled between a couple of simpler things on the old playlist.

Keep up the great stuff and I’ll continue to recomend your podcast! I’m really lovin’ it.

Have enjoyed all your webcast I've managed to listen to so far. Keep up the good work.

I tend to agree w/ many of your appraisals of the various artist you've played so far including Strangeboys (great raw honest sound), Slick 57 (new poppier cd sounds nothing like you'd expect), Pilotdrift (also appeals to my pink floyd side of many years gone by) and even 41 Gorgeous Blocks (way too late for the pop punk trend which has since disintegrated to a load of heavy metal horseshit that even metalheads don't like). It's also refreshing for others to understand that Europe gets what we do not, the beauty of pure American Rock & Roll.

To not over indulge us w/ Observer / former Observer folks, may I suggest future guests to include Teresa Gubbins, Hunter Hauk, Chris Ryan, cheerleader Cindy Chaffin or granddaddy of them all George Gimarc?

best of luck / I'll stay tuned in,

Like the new look'n'feel, and very much enjoyed the first two shows, despite their length.

I was there, but I didn't see you or I'd have said hello. It was a great show! I always love a good, long 40+ song DRD set.
